March 2011: WHITE GLOVE SALE - THAT'S MAGIC

Phew!
The dust is just settling on the first Historics sale of 2011.

With over 100 vehicles up for auction on top of the automobilia, it was always going to be a long day...and so it proved.

First thing to say is that the Captain America collection gave the team their first 'White Glove Sale' (all Lots sold) which was a great result.

Star of the show was probably the 1933 Dodge Recovery Truck.  Discovered in New Mexico where it's stood still for over 50 years, this mighty truck is complete with authentic bullet holes in the nearside front wing and bonnet...which I guess made it ideal for use in the Captain America movie.  Together with Executive Producer Nigel Gostelow, Historics set an estimate for this vehicle at somewhere between £1000 and £3000.

Possibly down to the pre-sale attention, or maybe because it was parked right outside the entrance to the room, the wonderfully original example witnessed ferocious bidding before finally going to its lucky new owner for £11,424 (including premiums)!

For roughly the same price (£11,200), and undoubtedly the bargain of the day, went the 1942 Chevrolet Gillig School/Tour Bus.  Having tried desperately to get clients to invest in this stunning bus as a promo vehicle, it was at least good to see it go to a good home along with everything else.

Other personal favourites would have to be a 1941 GMC Series 100 Pick-Up Truck which was top-seller at £13,720, and on the car side of things, a 1948 Chrysler Windsor for £9,744, 1940 Oldsmobile Hydra-matic Coupe for £7,056 while the second of two 1941 Ford V8 Coupe's went for £6,608.

In the other half of the sale...of somewhat more conventional cars...highlights included a beautifully restored 1964 Aston Martin DB5 selling for £229,600, a 1967 Shelby GT500 Mustang 'Eleanor' belonging to the 'Spurs player Benoit Assou-Ekotto (who was also there to watch it fly) which sold for £162,400, whilst a couple of the Mercedes we mentioned last week, a stunning 1970 280SE and the increasingly popular 190SL (1961) went for £100,800 and £49,280 respectively.

Still converting some provisional sales into concluded deals but initial thoughts are that it was a successful sale.  The capacity crowd certainly seemed pleased with proceedings.  I'm just glad I've got until May 21st to soak the feet!
